FGM
Awareness Camp

Educational work for equal rights

Although female circumcision (FGM/C) is prohibited by law in Kenya, it is unfortunately still a tragic reality for many women and girls. In order to protect young people and their families and raise awareness of this profound issue, the Jörg-Baetge-Foundation.Home4Education has commissioned the Reto Ang Community-Based Organization to organize a five-day awareness camp.

The overarching goal of our local partner organization is to put an end to this practice once and for all. The camp will also focus on other key issues of equality in order to actively counteract deep-rooted problems such as child marriage and unequal educational opportunities.

During the intensive, five-day program, the participants were provided with comprehensive knowledge. The focus was initially on a deeper understanding and critical perception of FGM. The attendees also received important information about sexual and reproductive health and the associated rights.

In order to strengthen the future prospects of girls and young women, the far-reaching consequences of teenage pregnancies and early school drop-outs were also openly addressed. The camp was supplemented by practical training courses on hygiene and career planning as well as sessions on environmental protection. The final aim was to encourage the participants to actively work for change and to pass on their new knowledge as multipliers in their own village communities.
